OK, NOW I get why Jim M. has his shorts in a knot! Now it makes some
sense. Jim, you made a big leap when you assumed that I was making
decisions on whether or not someone could attend a certain activity
based on medical issues. Let me assure you that I do no such thing and
didn't even conceive of that possibility. Nothing I wrote in any of my
posts should even hint at that, so I don't know where you got it from.
As I said in several different ways, I only collect that information to
be used in the case of an emergency or medical condition which requires
care. I keep the information on small cards, laminated and in my
possession at all times. This allows with a quick handoff during a
serious incident, and just has the basics: Meds, allergies, pre-existing
conditions, and contact info. No one else has access to it, and in fact
you need to cut the lamination to open it and read the patient info
which is inside. The outside just has a name. I make these just like the
accountability tags firefighters use.
Jim (M.), I absolutely agree with you. I don't make participation
decisions based on any medical information. That's not my job and I
don't go there. But I do want as many kids to participate as possible,
so I have, from time to time, altered our plans just a tad, to allow
someone to participate who otherwise might not be able to based on a
medical restriction. SO yeah, I guess you are right, I am guilty of
making adjustments, and I never realized that I might be doing something
wrong. Scouting is not inherently safe, and in my mind it is not
inherently dangerous either. I want everyone to have a hand in it, and I
want to make that experience as safe as possible. I try to make sure
that everyone is making informed decisions when it comes to the more
challenging stuff. But as far as deciding who goes and who can't, that
is always established by someone else, not me.
I don't know how you got the impression I was using medical information
for anything but treatment. That is not within my scope of practice. I
don't make participation decisions based on any medical issues. As you
stated, and I concur, that is up to the parents, the youth, and the
physician. However, it is part of my job to make sure that those parents
have a clear idea of what is involved in a particular activity so they
can make a good decision. Mostly, this refers to the maturity and
preparedness of the individual, not any medical issues.
Henry had it right, we are all right here. I think if you re-read the
posts that got you upset, you will see the none of us had said anything
about grass-roots medical 'screening'. If we did, I missed it.
Now I'm certain I've said enough, and if y'all can excuse me I have yet
another meeting to attend.
 Happy Hiking,
 Tom
