>>OK, I made a mistake in my count.
Not as bad as the mistake I made. After hours and hours of preparation
and planning, including printing out the meal schedule for our crew
leader and other minutia, I miscalculated our departure date and ended
up having our train tickets for the same day we got off the trail! What
a bone headed mistake.
No real harm done though. I realized the error near the end of our trek
as I started to get my head back into the logistics of finishing our
trek. I think it was at Upper Clarks Fork on our second to last night
on the trail. Our last camp was Tooth Ridge where we woke up pre-dawn
to ...
1. break camp during a meteor shower,
2. watched the sunrise,
3. hike down to base camp in
4. check-in our gear, shower and arrange for the afternoon bus to Raton
5. jump on the bus to Cimarron for lunch at Simple Somons (best calzone
I've ever eaten) & a little shopping
6. take the bus back to base camp with just enough time to shop at Tooth
of Time Traders
7. catch the bus to Raton.
8. wait 7 hours for the east bound train that's running late (midnight).
The Amtrak station manager called the Raton fire department who
graciously allowed us to stay at the station during the long wait.
It was one busy day and we did miss the closing campfire, but none of
the boys were upset and they were actually glad to be on their way home.
BTW, one of the problems with a late train is that it throws their mean
schedule off. The dining car ended up being closed except to sleeper
passengers, who prepay for all meals, and the snack bar was running low
on almost everything. I don't know why they don't restock during the
layover in Kansas City, but they don't. So you may want to make sure
you pick up some snack for the ride home. Note that there is no stores
near the depot in Raton so it would be best to buy some snacks in
Cimarron.
