We were told by our rangers in 2002 and 2004 that the Stockade trail was
OFF LIMITS to normal trek'rs. They said the trail was not well maintained
and thusly, reserved for rangers trying to get somewhere fairly speedily.

I completely agree with Doug.
I worked at Clarks Fork (most crews' final stop before Base Camp), and
we were always told to emphasize that the switchbacks were the best way
to go down the ridge: both for the crew and for the land. Its not as
bad as most people say, and in talking to people who have hiked the
Stockade trail, it makes less than an hour's difference in time; also,
don't forget that there is a reason for these shortcut trails being
"closed" to crews. As messages have said, the trails are rocky, slick,
overgrown, and STEEP. Just look at the topographic maps.
In the end, it is each crews decision. I have hiked the switchbacks
several times, and plan on doing it again.
Best of Luck

doesn't look too bad
If by west you're talking about the trail that leads off to the right
just below tooth ridge camp (near Stockade) we had to hike up that
trail to tooth ridge camp after the fire re-route in 2002. It's
steep, rocky and overgrown with shrubs that catch on your clothing and
pack and leave you pretty well scratched up. Then you would have to
either catch one of the buses (probably not allowed) or hike back
around the tooth through the field that some have reported as well
occupied by rattlesnakes or hike to the highway and take the long way
back. And you don't come back through the "you've made it" entrance.
I've had the "pleasure" of coming down the long tooth ridge trail
three times, so I understand the allure, but I can't recommend the side
trail.
