I did this trail back in '04 and looked forward to seeing it for myself
after hearing this very same debate for the many months before. I took a
look down the shortcut trail and it reminded me of a trail we have not too
far from my home that gains or loses (depending on your point of view)
1,500 feet in 1 mile. It is tough going up, but it is a killer on the knees
coming down.
So having taken the long way, let me offer a different perspective: I
thought it was a very pleasant walk. A little long on the mind because of
all the switchbacks, but I challenge you to watch the changing fauna as you
descend. What an amazing transiton takes place! I counted seven different
varities of cactus that I had not seen anywhere else on the ranch. Some
were still in flower, what a treat. I was a little annoyed that my crew
would not allow me time to take better pictures, they could smell the barn!
We too had visibility on the tooth that allowed us to see all the way to
the ends of our arms, but those are the breaks.
If I ever get back there, I would really like to spend an afternoon on
that Tooth Ridge Trail and do a little more studying. I thought it was
great.
Your mileage may vary, I guess it's all how you look at it.
Happy Hiking,
Tom
