Re: [Philmont]: Trail down the tooth

This summer the crew decided to take the Pasture Trail down from Tooth Ridge camp to base camp. The Pasture Trail cut off is about 1/4 mile down the Ridge Trail from Tooth Ridge camp. It has a BRAND NEW sign, and was in pretty good shape. From these observations, I thought it was pretty clear that the Pasture Trail was an option to the oft-belittled Ridge Trail. The Pasture Trail was steep, but no steeper than any trail up or down Baldy or Phillips.

I've done the old Ridge Trail once, and the new Ridge Trail twice, and now the Pasture Trail. I'd recommend the Pasture Trail every time. We hit the low pasture about an hour after sunrise, and the walk with the Tooth of Time back over our shoulder was a much more beautiful walk than anything viewed on the Ridge Trail.

The Pasture Trail also took more than an hour off of the walking time of the Ridge Trail.

That trail down from the tooth is long, those switchbacks go forwever.
I would be tempted to take one of the trails down the west side next
time and walk around. Anybody done that? On the map, it doesn't look
too bad.

We almost tried one this past summer. By the time we got to base camp I
wished we had. I also would be interested if anyone has any comments on
these trails.
