About the only non-bird and non-insect fauna we saw was the horses down
below.
Flora, on the other hand, was a nice transition :-)

I think we averaged 4 mph going down that trail. I had a hard time
getting them to stop long enough to take a picture under the sign :-)
The crew was quite
anxious to get into CHQ. That was what made the temptation of those
straight trails so strong, those switchbacks went all the way around
the ridge and you would think you were making progress, turn a
switchback, and soon find yourself looking like you hadn't gotten
any closer after hiking another quarter mile. I think maybe they
wouldn't be so tiresome if they were just a bit shorter and you could
keep CHQ in view so you knew you were continually making progress.

I guess we were lucky. Rain stopped around day 7, and we had clear
cool weather all the way to the end. The Tooth was great.

One of the temptations with those trails is that we never got to
see the west side of the tooth (other than looking down it from the top)
on itinerary 2. The west side is the "classic" tooth picture, and our
boys didn't get to see it. You can't really see that view of the
tooth from CHQ either. You can see it well from the stockade, and
you can see it well from Rocky Mountain Scout camp. But we didn't go
there, and my crew was a bit disappointed they didn't get to see it
the way the pictures made it look in our presentation for the trek.
