The bull actually predated the red wool jack shirt. It started out as a
three piece bull, modeled after a tile at the downstairs back entrance to
the Villa. You earned a piece of the bull for each year that you attended
Philmont. The tradition for years was that you showed that you had hiked
Tooth Ridge by sewing the tail of your bull over the shoulder seam of your
jack shirt. Philmont actually worked hard back in the mid-1980's to get rid
of that tradition... It was thought that the desire to wear the bull that
way was a factor encouraging too many PTC folks who had no business doing it
to hike the ridge. Many of them were having to be rescued.
