Jerry, you don't say where you are coming from, but coming from the
Philadelphia area, I took 3 weeks off work, and other adults took 2 weeks
plus 3 days at a minimum. We left early Monday morning, July 12, 2004, and
spent time in Colorado Springs for pre-trek activities (whitewater, Pikes
Peak, Flying W, Koshare Kiva). Arrived Thursday AM, July 15, at Philmont for
Day 1.

We left Philmont the morning of Day 13 (July 27) to drive to Denver,
expecting to arrive home around midnight in Philly, via Atlanta. The
thunderstorms in Atlanta put a halt to that and we spent day 14 in the
Atlanta airport, arriving home around noon on Wednesday July 28.

Be prepared for unplanned changes in itinerary, be flexible. I had been
planning for the trip to Philmont for a year and a half, so I had been
saving vacation time for this.

While some folks had to go to work Thursday, I enjoyed the two extra days to
sort through my pictures, wash my trail clothes a half dozen times, and look
longingly at the brands on my boots. I knew this was a big commitment going
in, more than just two weeks of summer camp, and planned accordingly. If an
advisor is trying to "fit Philmont" into his schedule, you may need to
reconsider the commitment.

If you choose midweek dates- Do you have a problem getting Adults to attend
and get time off from work??? My concern was getting eneough Leaders to
attend with the crews and being able to get the time off.
Thanks for the replies.

First of all, your chances of getting a Monday arrival day are 1 out of 7.
If you only specify Monday arrival dates in the computer generated lottery,
your chances of being selected are very, very small. By the way, this week
is the final week to register in the lottery for 2007.

The arrival date is the day you arrive at Philmont. The earlier in the day
the better. The first night is spent at Camping Headquarters (CHQ).
The trek begins the next day and you'll have ten nights in the backcountry
and then one night back at CHQ camp before departing. That yields 12 nights
at Philmont, including 2 nights (first & last) at CHQ. For an extra per
person fee, you can usually arrange to arrive a day early or depart a day
later.

If you arrive on a Monday, here is what your visit will look like.

Day 1 - Monday - Arrive. Typically, the train arrives in Raton in the
afternoon so you won't be able to accomplish very many of the CHQ check-in
tasks that day.

Day 2 - Tuesday - Rush to finish up CHQ check-in tasks and catch an
afternoon bus to the backcountry.

Day 3 - Wednesday - In Backcountry

Day 4 - Thursday - In Backcountry

Day 5 - Friday - In Backcountry

Day 6 - Saturday - In Backcountry

Day 7 - Sunday - In Backcountry

Day 8 - Monday - In Backcountry

Day 9 - Tuesday - In Backcountry

Day 10 - Wednesday - In Backcountry

Day 11 - Thursday - In Backcountry

Day 12 - Friday - Come in off the trail. Hopefully, in the morning.
Final campfire program that night.

Day 13 - Saturday - Depart Philmont
