Pete,

No, we did it on July 27. And in response to Mike, I agree everybody should
experience the Tooth Ridge trail once. We took one crew this past summer
but we have applied for 3 treks for 2007. The enthusiasm of our veterans
has spread through the troop and we have a lot of interest from scouts and
dads. Some of our vets want to do a strenuous or super strenuous trek next
time and we will have a typical trek in the south country for our young guys
that will probably finish over the tooth ridge. Then we will have a third
option, probably a rugged trek for those in between the two extremes. That
is the one that I will go on. I know I'm getting ahead of myself here.
Good luck to everyone in the lottery this year. This is the "open" and
final week by the way.

Bill,

By chance, you weren't coming off Tooth Ridge on August 5th, were you? We
got into base camp on August 4th and it was a crystal clear morning. I
remember saying to our crew that I felt bad for any crews coming in "this
morning" because if the fog.

I got to go to Philmont for the first time this past summer and we finished
with the Tooth Ridge Trail. I hope to go back to Philmont a couple more
times but I will not do that again! Been there, done that. I pampered my
54 year old knees through the first 10 days with liberal doses of Ibuprofen,
Glucosamine/Chondroitin and the religious use of trekking poles. They held
up very well those first 10 days only to be destroyed on the last day by
that beast. It is long, it is downhill and it is extremely rugged. It was
close to 4 weeks after we got home that I thought I might not live the rest
of my life in pain from the ordeal. And here is the topper. We had our
only hard rain of the trip the night before and that morning the Tooth Ridge
was completely socked in. Visibility was probably 80 - 100 feet and it
stayed that way until late morning when we had already hiked up to the Tooth
and had seen nothing. I suspect that one of the trails down the west side
wouldnt be much better, especially for people with bad knees because they
are so steep.

Dont get me wrong. I had a great time and Im ready to go back in 2007 if
we are lucky.

That trail down from the tooth is long, those switchbacks go forwever. I
would be tempted to take one of the trails down the west side next time and
walk around. Anybody done that? On the map, it doesn't look too bad.

We almost tried one this past summer. By the time we got to base camp I
wished we had. I also would be interested if anyone has any comments on
these trails.
