Dr. Bob said, "My will has a small section detailing that all of my
Arrowheads are to be returned to Philmont, with a request that those not
wanted for historical purposes (presumably the the 50th and the Y2K) be
destroyed at an opening or closing campfire."
Why not use that patch to help with Philmont staff scholarships?
I mean no disrespect to Dr. Bob. I understand that what one wants done with
their stuff after they die is an intensely personal decision on many levels.
Also, I believe I understand the personal value of that Arrowhead. I have
earned 2 and, GW&TCDR, I will earn a third next August. That patch,
especially for an adult, represents both months of preparation and a
difficult journey once one arrives at Philmont.
Anyway, it seems such a loss just to destroy the Arrowhead once you are
gone. What if you gave the patch to the Philmont Staff Association for
scholarship purposes?
You could donate the patches to the PSA and it could sell them during a
fundraiser. If one donated them with a journal and pictures, then the patch
would have context for the new owner.
Will this guaranty that the new owner will appreciate the patch? No. It may
just go into a desk somewhere.
Will this fund a full scholarship for a Philmont staffer? Probably not.
However, this gift is a small way to to say, I want Philmont to be valuable
to future Scouts and the best way I can do that when I am gone is to help
the staff.
Anyway, not meaning to pick on Dr. Bob, but his post got me to thinking. So,
where did I put my will?
