I believe that the most important factor is that the hiker WANTS to go
to Philmont (his choice). This WANT must be derived from inside and not
influenced by others (parents or peers). When the hiker wants to go to
Philmont, they are willing to do the following:
1. Be willing to lose weight and get in shape.
2. Be willing to hike together as a crew and not try to
split the crew.
3. Attend mandatory training.
The second factor is that the hiker has reached a certain level of
maturity to the extent that they are aware of cause and affect. While
goofing off is fun, if you are 5 miles from help, if somebody gets hurt,
who carries them out? Maturity also reveals itself additionally by:
1. Being willing to drink the water and stay hydrated.
2. Being willing to eat the food.
3. Being willing to stay clean (washing body and clothes
daily).
4. Being able to self-medicate.
The third factor is that the hiker must be willing to work as a member
of the crew or as the leader. Taking scouts that have to be constantly
prodded to do their chores indicate that while they would like to go to
Philmont, they are not ready to participate in the Philmont experience.
Finally, each parent must be willing to discuss any issues with the crew
leader such as A.D.D., A.D.H.D, L.D., and E.D. This type of information
is required to best know how to work with a hiker. It is not for crew
knowledge, just for advisors.
Just my thoughts.

Dr. Bob and others,
This meeting is for Scouts, crew advisors and parents. The purpose of
the
meeting is to offer practical advice and answer gear, itinerary and
logistics questions related to the trip out, the experience at Philmont
and
the trip home. We'll discuss trek planning, practice and shakedown
hikes,
as well as crew and advisor responsibilities.
We'll also be covering all travel, as well as sharing a comprehensive
gear
review on what is, and what isn't, needed on the trail.
The meeting will last about one and a half hours.
Any important words of wisdom will be greatly appreciated, probably
moreso
than information related to gear and trek logistics.
An example of something I'll be sharing with the group is "Expedition
Behavior" by Howard Tomb. It was something I got off this forum prior
to
our trip last summer. It's the one that begins with Rule #1: "Get the
heck
out of bed!" I think information like this can be more helpful than the
gear and trek information.
