I know *exactly* how you feel. I did the same thing :-)
I am assuming you are talking about a 12 day.

for our 2005 trek, we got meals for four.

We received meals for 4. With 11, we received
meals for 12 at our three pickups (before we hit the
trail and the two commissary pickups).

At each location is a swap box (and at most staffed camps)
where you can drop off extras or what you don't want,
depending on camp policy.

We discovered that if we dump the extras, we didn't have
enough of some meals and still had too much of others.
We decided that we would rather keep the lot and drop
at swap boxes (assuming the camp allowed that, there was
a definite lack of uniformity there) as we got through
the meals. We found it best to evaluate each meal as we
prepared it whether we wanted to fix for 10 or 12, with
an 11 person crew. It just depended what it was. If most
of the crew liked it, we fixed 12 as they would eat it.
If most of the crew didn't like it, we would fix 10 so they
would finish it.

For our crew, we grabbed every gatorade packet we could find
at every swap box we came to. Some other crews didn't
like gatorade. I guess it just depends what you like.

By the way, we discovered that for our crew, we had to make
it a rule that no breakfast would be served until we were
packed up and ready to hit the trail. Otherwise, the boys
took a very long time to pack up. Some crews, as I
understand it, actually hit the trail before they have
breakfast, presumably for the same reason. I think you
will impress your ranger if you already have this issue
dealt with before you get there.

Finally, if you don't already have it, get Coop and Wally's
advisors guide. You will not regret it. Coop will happily
email it to you for your agreement to send his crew payment
for same.

Also, we got carabiners and aluminum water bottles with our
trek info engraved on them for a pretty good price. The boys all
liked them both as souviners and for the utility, and they made
great gifts to the ranger and other staff. If anyone is interested,
I can point you to the website where I got them. I also got souviner
trinkets from Disneyland to give to people on staff who were
helpful. That seemed to go over well as well.
