AHH, Maroon Bells near Aspen, Colo............one of my most favorite places
on earth.

My older son (Eagle Scout) is a student at Western State college in
Gunnison, Colo. Lives in Crested Butte, another great location, winter or
summer.

>I suspect that no one really knows how the selections were made. We tried
>for the first time in 30 years in 2003 and got a trek. We tried again for
>2008 and got a trek. It's all magic, I'm sure.
>
>Perhaps the only thing that might make it more fair would be to eliminale
>all council berths. Simply have "slots" consisting of 12-person crews with
>a minimum of 2 adults per crew. Then, as a crew places their request, they
>are given a crew number, one of a total fixed number (what,1600 or so??) .
>Once all the "slots" are given out, the lottery is closed. Then, using any
>number of random number generators, the "slots" are assigned crews. I
>suspect this has been suggested in the past, but just a thought.
>
>Honestly, just one more reason for Troops to begin their own High Adventure
>program. In the past 7 years with my son we have been to the BWCA 4 times,
>Wyoming, the 2001 Jamboree and Philmont. So many places, so little time.
>Next year it is the Smokies. And, I suspect we will have an alternative
>High Adventure while a crew goes to Philmont as well. Other summers have
>included Maroon Bells in CO, Isle Royal, other trips to the Smokies. Not
>to
>mention the monthly campouts. Lots of ways to give our scouts the outdoors
>experience they are looking for.
>
>While I certainly see value in Philmont, that is is a nice place to include
>as part of a Scouting career, there are numerous other places where you can
>have a greater sense of wilderness. Anyway, for those that have not gotten
>a slot, there are hundreds of places to go - go forth and have fun!!!
