9 is an good North Country Trek whose big plus is Baldy but that has a weak
finish. You do Baldy on Day 8 from Copper Park. It been a (long) while
since I made this hike but I don't remember it being all that bad.
11 is nice South Country Trek with a super, but hard, Finish.
11 is going to give you more evening program opportunities than 9, you can
still get some evening program with 9 but you will have a longer walk back
to your campsite bieng at a trial camp... There is more to Philmont than
Baldy and the Tooth ... having doe both Baldy & Phillips I'd have to say
that there is something about going over Phillips with Packs that I find
more personally appealling than Baldy ... that said I look forward to one
more shot at Baldy.
If your crew views the Burros as something they will be stuck with, I'd
recommend another Trek. Hate to have a bad experience as your closer. Tha
said I've heard that the Burro experience is a good one.
In the end there really aren't any bad treks, just bad fits. If the mix of
activities and physical challenges suit your group then you've found yours.
I don't know what your selection criteria is, but take a hard look at 4, 5,
20 or 26 in the south and 21,22 or 24 for the North.

Subject: [philmont] Planning for Treks in 2007
Our Crew got together and made some preliminary decisions on its treks for
2007. Now let's hope there are not too many changes when Philmont sends out
the 2007 Itinerary Guide. That usually comes around March, doesn't it?
The crew's choices for treks are:
1. 9
2. 11
3. 16
4. 1
5. 28
From what I have heard on this list, we should either get our first or
second choice. I hope that remains in 2007.
And now to the question. Anybody want to offer any input on on treks 9 or
11? We're gonna get stuck with the mules on 9, that much I know and I hear
the climb to Baldy is pretty darn tough on 9. Other than that, I'm
clueless. Of our 12 member crew, only 1 has been to Philmont in the past.
Thanks for your input.
