[philmont] Planning for Treks in 2007

Bill,
The trail coming down the ridge from Greenwood Canyon into Copper Park was one of the worst I've ever done. In 2005, our crew basically did a controlled fall from tree to tree. In a typical season several campers would need to be evacuated with broken legs or ankles. Sadly, this straight-down trail was replaced with a switchback last year, so not to worry....

The hike up Baldy from Copper Park is very tough, was tough enough walking down this trail. I have seen many mention another trail from Greenwood Canyon, which I think follows the ridgeline on the north side of Baldy, rather than following the rubble field.

Our Crew got together and made some preliminary decisions on its treks for 2007. Now let's hope there are not too many changes when Philmont sends out the 2007 Itinerary Guide. That usually comes around March, doesn't it?

The crew's choices for treks are:

  1. 9
  2. 11
  3. 16
  4. 1
  5. 28

From what I have heard on this list, we should either get our first or second choice. I hope that remains in 2007.

And now to the question. Anybody want to offer any input on on treks 9 or 11? We're gonna get stuck with the mules on 9, that much I know and I hear the climb to Baldy is pretty darn tough on 9. Other than that, I'm clueless. Of our 12 member crew, only 1 has been to Philmont in the past.

  Thanks for your input.
