[philmont] "refluff" sleeping bag

Steve,
Don't know why any company that makes sleeping bags would "refluff" a bag - you need to wash it, its part of caring for the bag. Guessing that the bags have man made insulation follow the instructions for washing: use side loading washing machines. You can dry them by hanging them using the little loop at the foot of the bag and let them drip dry, don't hang them over a hanger - it breaks the fibers. The fibers in the insulation get coated by oils from the people sleeping in them and lose their loft. Also be aware that no man made insulation last forever, don't care if the bag has a life time warranty or not. The only insulation that will last a lifetime is down and it takes extra care when cleaning. Store the bags in large cotton bags, don't store them stuffed in the stuff bags. The insulation when stuffed will lose its loft and you just won't be able to get it back. I've also never heard of a troop owning sleeping bags, they are awfully personal items, kind of like
toothbrushes. Considering that sleeping bags now retail for what they wholesaled for 10 years ago it doesn't make much sense for a troop to buy them - in my opinion.

One of my Scouters emailed me to ask if I knew how to "refluff" a sleeping. These are not expensive bags, but are still used by the troop. He had heard that they could be returned to Coleman for this process. Not true. He mentioned that if I did not know, would I ask "the list." Here it is.
