Re: Names of camps. A resource for this type of information is Rock Rohrbacker's book Philmanack, available at Tooth of Time Traders. Rohrbacker has been a seasonal employee for decades and claims to have camped at every Philmont camp, past and present, active and inactive. He can be contacted at 420 S. Cass St, Delphos, Ohio,45833.
Of the camps Joe mentioned, Four Mile is four miles from Ponil, Metcalf Canyon camp is in Metcalf canyon, which branches off Ponil canyon to the northeast just upstream of Old Camp The canyon is named for a Deputy Sheriff ambushed during the Colfax county wars. Wilson Mesa was probably atop Wilson mesa, believed (according to Rohrbacker) to have been named for W.P. Wilson, a captain attached to the Cimarron Indian Agency.
Clarks Fork-no idea. Harlan-named (according to Rock) for Thomas Harlan, chief proponent of the St. Louis, Rocky Mountain and Pacific Railroad, which ran up Cimarron canyon to Ute Park. Ponil (again, according to R.R.) is named after a plant called Apache Plume, which has five points, like the five canyons that spread out from Ponil, which was known as Five Points in the original Philturn Rockymountain Scout Camp of 1938. Cook Canyon Camp named for the canyon named for Deputy Sheriff George W. Cook, who was active in evicting "squatters" from the Maxwell Co. lands in the Ponil canyon vicinity.
Crags is named for its excellent view of The Crags, the collapsed volcanic cone of Crater Peak. This formation is also prominently visible from Fish Camp. The Crags was one of Waite Phillips' favorite fishing holes and is a beautiful camp. See the Philmont Field Guide chapter on geology for a geologic tour of the Rayado Canyon from Abreu to Fish Camp, including the Crags and the Fowler fault. Recommended pre-trek reading for all who will have this hike on their trek.
All for now.
