<snip> I'm sure that the PEAKS project would welcome a sampling of maps to
their archive as well.
Comment...
For those unaware of it, the so-called "PEAKS project" mushroomed out of a
request a year or so ago for information relating to a specific trek route
from 1974. That led to musings about
"wouldn't it be nice to collect old PEAKS (the pre-2000 name for what is
now called TREKS) books?" for answering such questions
to permission from Philmont to post such documents on-line
to scanning the PEAKS/TREKS Itinerary Guide (as well as the corresponding
Guidebook to Adventure) for every year since those documents were created in
the 1960's
to supplementing the document archive with various other historical
documents.
Which is where the project is today.
The documents were initially posted as part of Patriots' Path Council's
Watchu Experience (Philmont crew preparation) website,
http://www.watchu.org/, but the archive quickly grew to require a home of
its own, at http://philmontdocs.watchu.org/, as items beyond PEAKS and
Guidebooks were added.
The Watchu Experience site, while specific to Patriots' Path crews, has a
wealth of general Philmont information that would be of value to every
Philmont crew.
Most of the archive would be of more interest to those who had been at
Philmont already, but the 2006 "TREKS Itinerary Guide" and "Guidebook of
Adventure" posted there will be of great benefit to 2007 crews until the
current year versions are out in March. Of course, there are always changes
to at least a couple treks each year, so last year's material can only be
used as general preparation for the evaluation of the actual 2007 treks.
Those with access to any historical documents (including maps, but just
about anything else) that they would be willing to lend for purposes of
scanning are encouraged review what is already posted. If you have
something new to contribute, contact Tom Wills (off-List at
twills@comcast.net) regarding exactly what you have and for instructions on
how to get it to him. The many Scouters who have provided documents can
attest that he will be very careful with what is sent to him and that it
will be returned promptly.
In addition, background information such as more definitive dates for items
already posted or the evolution of the various trekking programs (especially
for the period after World War II through the 1950s) would also be
appreciated.
For the PEAKS project team, and thanking you in advance for any
contributions - Al Thomson
