One thing I will add to John's description is: they have herring-bone scoring down the length of the shank. At least mine do. They are terrific.

Yep, yep, yep............that's them. That "herring-bone helps 'em hold tight in loose soil and that's when you need all you can get from a tent stake.
I always pack a few extras and when I need extra "gription" I drive them in in the shape of an "X" just like the old Scout Handbook described making a snow or sand anchor. It works.
