[philmont] Supercharged Gutter Spikes

Big, ALUMINUM nail looking things are what you are looking for. Bought
right from gutter supply companies, they cost about 10 cents each. They
are a little less than 1/4" in dia and about 8 or 9 inches long.

The advantage over aluminum tent stakes is twofold. First----strength.
They are made from tempered aluminum. That means they don't bend as
easily as "tent stakes" and the second is cost. AS previously posted,
they can be bought right for 10 cents each.

Keep in mind that these things are designed to be hammered into wood
eaves and facias to hold up rain gutters. As a result they are less
likely to bend than your standard aluminum tent stake. They will bend
though, especially if you try to drive one through a rock; so will steel
rebar. They will also drive into tree roots nicely, which makes them
very difficult to remove. Tree roots aren't a problem at most Philmont
campsites, but can be in other parts of the country.

Regarding "Trip Tease" cord - I think Kelty markets it - it makes your
guylines light up like they were covered with diamonds. You can see the
stuff from several yards away. In addition to guylines, it also makes a
good laundry line. If it should sag at all, it will still be highly
visible and possibly prevent an unsavory accident.

Happy Trails,

Roy Fisher
