[philmont] Recommendations on Boots?

Jim,

Joe has some good advice, but I want to add that your shakedowns must also
be with true weighted packs. We purchased my son some trail runners
(against my better judgement) that were great in the store and on light
hikes. As soon as we put weight on him, he melted down. We wound up having
to get a pair of mid-height Merrells (what I pushed for in the first place)
to solve most of the problem. The balance of the tears were taken care of
with a pair of Spenco Backpacker insoles designed for those backpacking
multiple days with 25+ pounds. After that, there wasn't a peep out of him
during any of the shakedowns or the near 100 miles at Philmont.

Happy hiking!

  Hello all,

I am leading a crew in August of 08.

Any recommendations on boots and footwear from the group?

        Yours In Scouting Service,
