One other thing the scouts need to consider is when to purchase the boots.
We had several scouts last year with feet that were still growing. Other
scouts looked like they had stopped growing, but with teenagers, you never
know. This was a dilemma for the parents. You want to get the boots as
soon as possible so you have plenty of time for break-in, but you don't want
to outgrow them. The scout who waited the longest bought his boots about
two months before we departed for Philmont. He only got to wear them on one
shakedown. He then wore them everyday going to school and his summer job in
the hope that they would be fine on the trail. He was the only person who
had any significant hot spot and blister problems. He knew how to treat his
feet and he did fine, but he wished he had a little longer break-in period
with a full pack.
