Boots really depend on the use. For hiking my personal preference is a good leather boot that comes over an ankle. Honestly, in 35 years I have only purchased 2 pair - first a pair of Summit boots in 72. GREAT BOOTS!! coated them in snoseal and used the heck outta them. But, they weigh a ton! Still have them, still take them out for a spin every once and awhile.
My second was prior to a walk across Scottland from Inverness to the Isle of Skye. These are Monarch. Much lighter. Used mink oil and wore them for about 4 months before we left for our trip. One odd thing though. Just before our philmont departure my tarsle (sp?) bones on my right foot went outta wack. The pain felt like needls plunged straight down into the top of my foot. I went to a local backpack/camping store where I had purchased a pack earlier and asked for some thoughts. They changed the lacing process of my boots through the center of the boot. The pain went away within a week. Really knew their stuff.
My other pair are jungle boots. I use these at the BWCA. I am known as a "wet footer" and simply stay wet during the day and change to dry camp shoes and socks once in camp and after our daily swim. We require our scouts to swim in boots/shoes, PDF and their paddling clothes. Then we all switch to dry clothing and dry the rest. I spent many a mile in jungle boots and they are impossible to beat in a wet environment.
Enjoy your trip!!
Bill

Subject: [philmont] Recommendations on Boots?
Hello all,
I am leading a crew in August of 08.
Any recommendations on boots and footwear from the group?
Yours In Scouting Service,
Jim Zeszutek
