Lacing/tying your boots as Kim suggests lets you adjust the tension in the
lacing above and below the 'stopper' knot. This lets you lock in your ankle
and heel but still allows you wiggle room for your toes - and keeps them
separate. There are a number of other techniques that can be used to lace
your boots to accommodate different boot/foot interfaces. One source is at

enough.
I will frequently adjust how I lace my boots depending on the terrain. For
example climbing up Baldy I laced them one way, climbing down I laced them
another. The first to keep my heel in the heel cup and prevent blisters
from forming; the other to help keep my toes from sliding into the toe box
and getting "black toe" (bruised nail beds from pounding your toes into the
fronts of your boots) and allowing my ankle to flex a bit more.
You don't have to get blisters at Philmont!

you can also try different various of tying your boot laces and boot inserts
for better support.
I wear a High, over the ankle type of boot. I use the first part of a
square knot (or bow) right at the ankle, then hook the lace in the hooks
above the ankle, but bring the lace over from the TOP to make final bow. I
hope that makes sense.
Putting the begining of a square knot at the ankle helps to keep my foot in
place, and not slide forward. Bringing the lace over from the top at the
end helps keep the laces tight. Got these tips from an REI employee when
getting ready for my first PHilmont Trek in 1999.
