[philmont] Boots

Great fitting boots are great. Great socks are great. Both will get wet, and dirty, and full of small gravel unless you have a way to keep these things out of your boot tops. Long pants sort of work for everything but water over the boot top in a stream.

Get a pair of lightweight "shortie" gaiters, either the very breathable "desert" type or the stretchy type. Your boots, socks and feet will thank you. After 2 days on the trail the difference in the amount of grit in boots and socks is amazing. If it rains the gaiters keep water from running down your legs into your boots (lets that gore-tex work in the "right" direction).

If you don't have gaiters, get some, you'll love the difference.
