Great fitting boots are great. Great socks are great. Both will get wet,
and dirty, and full of small gravel unless you have a way to keep these
things out of your boot tops. Long pants sort of work for everything but
water over the boot top in a stream.

 

Get a pair of lightweight "shortie" gaiters, either the very breathable
"desert" type or the stretchy type. Your boots, socks and feet will thank
you. After 2 days on the trail the difference in the amount of grit in
boots and socks is amazing. If it rains the gaiters keep water from running
down your legs into your boots (lets that gore-tex work in the "right"
direction).

 

If you don't have gaiters, get some, you'll love the difference.
