[philmont] Gaiters

Did you read what George aylor had to say about Crocs? Enough said.

As to gaiters. Well, being both old fashioned and sufficiently old enough, I understand where they developed and what they developed for and it's not for trails like at Philmont.

Now if you can trick the brain into believing they are a good substitute for rain pants, so be it.

However, if keeping rocks/pebbles out of your boots is the sole purpose of gaiters, then you have overkill.

95% of the PhilTrails are hot. Wearing gaiters simply impedes the release of built up heat inside the boot. Foot heat is what you want to get rid of, not keep.

A more satisfactory solution to the rock/pebble problem is simpy wearing socks like SmartWool and then turning them down over the boot tops. This closes off the gap and wards off the pebbles and allows heat disipation to be kept at maximum and that's all I'm going to say about that. Unless that it looks funky chicken but who cares? It works.

I would agree with Terry. The trails at Philmont don't really have the growth of grasses & bushes along them where the usefullness of gaiters would be maximized, and if our crew of 12 had to stop any more than twice to get a rock out of a boot, I don't remember it. I'd leave the gaiters at home.
