I bought my first one in 1975 also. I think it was $23.oo and came with the
separate needle and a tin canister. It either had a primus label over an
optimus label or vice versa. That canister could hold up a full 8 quart
pot and get M&C cooked. I broke down and bought a nesting kit a couple of
years later for better stability and was using that until 2001 when another
leader dropped his pack with the kit in it and bent it out of recognition.
I finally broke down about 5 years ago and bought the optimus multi-fuel
which is great at simmering also.
Don't get me started on packs. I used an external for about 25 years and
always had hip bruises. I finally broke down and bought an Osprey and will
never go back( no more bruises). I can fit everything I used to carry in
the external without stuff hanging outside the back including 7 days of
food.
