Coming from the New England, I've always hiked with gaiters as a substitute
for rain pants because of the humidity. They don't keep your boots dry, but
they keep the mud out. I took them to Philmont in 2004 and never used them,
so I left them home this year and didn't miss them. Even when we
encountered mud, it was more like slippery glue. Not like the stuff in New
England.
