[Philmont] Recommendations on Boots?

Maria,

I did make it, and am going again this next summer.

There is a great list just for women at Philmont that I found great info to
use, in tandem to the Troop 47 conversations. You have to apply to join, to
keep it woman-exclusive, and it doesn't get as much action as this list, but
the info is good and woman-specific. You can find it at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PHilmont_women/join. One nice thing about
this list is that you can see all the posts and read stuff from long ago.
Once you've joined make sure you check out Philmont for Women by Jean Rishel
under the Files.

If you have any further questions, email me off-list.

Good luck and have a GREAT time!

  Hi Karen,

Did you make the trek with your son? I am signed up to go with my son and
wondering if you have any tips for us girls going?

  Thanks,
  Maria

The "Boot Heel Lock" lacing method is a great one too, also found at
that Backpacker magazine website
(http://www.backpacker.com/gear/footwear/lacing_3/0,6671,,00.html). Really
does a great job of keeping the heel locked back. My son & I use this
lacing technique., learned from a boot fitter at Bass Pro years ago. On the
way up Baldy in 2006, my son stopped half way up the last section and retied
one of his buddy's boots this way because he was complaining about sliding.
His buddy sang praises the rest of the trip.

Lacing/tying your boots as Kim suggests lets you adjust the tension in
the lacing above and below the ‘stopper’ knot. This lets you lock in your
ankle and heel but still allows you wiggle room for your toes – and keeps
them separate. There are a number of other techniques that can be used to
lace your boots to accommodate different boot/foot interfaces. One source
is at Backpacker magazine’s web site, specifically
http://www.backpacker.com/gear/footwear/lacing/0,6669,,00.html A google
search on boot lacing techniques will turn up several more if this isn’t
enough.

I will frequently adjust how I lace my boots depending on the terrain.
For example climbing up Baldy I laced them one way, climbing down I laced
them another. The first to keep my heel in the heel cup and prevent
blisters from forming; the other to help keep my toes from sliding into the
toe box and getting “black toe” (bruised nail beds from pounding your toes
into the fronts of your boots) and allowing my ankle to flex a bit more.

You don’t have to get blisters at Philmont!

      Happy Trails,

you can also try different various of tying your boot laces and boot
inserts for better support.

I wear a High, over the ankle type of boot. I use the first part of a
square knot (or bow) right at the ankle, then hook the lace in the hooks
above the ankle, but bring the lace over from the TOP to make final bow. I
hope that makes sense.

Putting the begining of a square knot at the ankle helps to keep my
foot in place, and not slide forward. Bringing the lace over from the top
at the end helps keep the laces tight. Got these tips from an REI employee
when getting ready for my first PHilmont Trek in 1999.
