Scott,

As Tw wrote, the Good Water trail at Lake Georgetown works well for
Philmont crews in central Texas. However, if you select this one, do it
before May or June as the weather can be very hot and humid then. In
2005, one of our crews did this trail in mid-June and said the heat and
humidity made it tougher than anything they encountered at Philmont.

The other location our crews use to prepare for Philmont is the Enchanted
Rock State Natural Area.

There is actually some "up and down" at ER. Our crews hike into one of
the three primitive camping areas (Walnut Spring is our favorite) and then
do three trips around the 4-mile loop trail. Crew members usually take
time to hike up the "Rock" too, sometimes with backpacks.

BTW, one of my sons lives near Little Elm (in Frisco) and teaches Social
Studies at Frisco High School. He went to Philmont in 1985.

YiS,
