If you want a REALLY good training course, North Trail District in Circle 10, has a twice annual Backcountry Advanced Training program. It consists of 2 thursday night meetings for classroom work, and then a weekend Philmont style backpack trip at Camp Meisenbach. They will assign a "ranger" to go with you on the weekend, and teach you many good backpacking techniques, although they are Philmont oriented. You will eat Philmont type food on the weekend, and the cost is very reasonable, about $25 or $30 bucks for the entire weekend. Each person has to register separately via their website, which can be accessed from www.circle10.org , but if you email them afterword, they would probably let your troop members function as a separate crew. I've been through the training, even after I went to Philmont, and found it helpful.
