[Philmont] Unusual advise

  I'm usually the wordy one on this list and strive to stimulate thinking even if the stimulus is a bit controversial. A different point of view if you wish.
   
  I'm going to be a little different in reply to your inquiry and stick to the basics.
   
  My suggestion for preparation for backpacking is to just go out and get started. Don't try to overly prepare at first. Make your priority one of "form follows function".
   
  That is learn by doing and the participants will gather knowledge on how best to get the job done at hand through a system of trial and error.
   
  This is a fantastic approach and the basis of all scouting activities.
   
  Somehow in the "training regimen" of things we loose sight of that and train into oblivion.
   
  Gather up the basics and then hit the trail. The ten essentials every hiker should have is a great place to start.
