In short, learn to walk before trying to run.

- Dr. Bob

  **********************************************************

Te gist of my post was "just do it". Today we tend to research and Google an idea to death rather than taking a few precautions adn getting on with the program.

Dr. Bob, reply above really hit a ringer with me.

UNtil a few days ago I was on the canoe list. Because of a post the moderator did not like I was banned from the list. Their loss, my gain. Their loss in that I possess over 60 years canoeing experinece, 55 of the with Scouting. My gain in that I do not have to waste my time posting the obvious on that list anymore.

My reply was in answer to a ding-bat inquiry that went something like this "we have a new troop of 11 and 12 year olds and want to emphasize high adventure, werhe do we go? Philmont? Boundary Waters? Do we use Northern Tier or an outfitter?

Because my post subject line was "you gotta crawl then walk then run" and the body expanded on that, I really enjoyed Dr. Bob's version of the exact same thing I recommended on canoe list.

The shame of it was I hit a nerve of a sanctimonious self appointed God I mean moderator adn he permanently banned me from the list. I might add that he did not have the courtesy to even state his/her name but chose to hide behind his mothers apron stringe.

  OK, enough of my criticisms.

I'm just glad that the philmont list tolerates straight forward adn to the point replys.

Political correctness isn't even politcally correct for pliticians and it darned sure isn't apropriate for Scouting. After all a part of the Scout law is honesty and political correctness is a downright lie.

  OK, enough John!

The whole idea is to get out there adn do it.

Start small, start easy, start with hour hikes, then half day, then day, then overnighters, then weekenders, then long weekenders, then a week. You get the picture.

But just go do them. Don't be afraid to hit a few nerved, create a few blisters, get thirsty, wear the wrong clothes.

Don't overextend, but don't be afraid to make a few mistakes and learn by doing.

You cannot perfect it on the first try nor should you try to or want to.
