This is why Wilderness First Aid and other pre-Philmont training is SO
important. In Wilderness First Aid we were taught: If you can tap a vein,
you can tap a juice box.
We found ourselves in a world of hurt in the Smokies. Just as described
below, one of our Scouts improperly tapped a box and juiced the upholstery
of my Suburban. It took our whole Troop, and the assistance of two other
Troops, to hang the Suburban that night.

We have an assistant Scoutmaster in our troop who has banned juice boxes for
those days when he must babysit the grandkids. Apparently, like starting an
IV, there is a particular technique which must be employed in puncturing the
box with the curved straw. Failure to follow this protocol exactly causes
the juice to rocket from the end of the straw in an explosive manner,
creating smellable clothing, carpeting and upholstery.
