A Scouter in my council is taking a crew to Philmont next year. It is the
first time his troop has been. He asked for advice and below is my reply.
I thought this might help other "newbies" too.

In my opinion, the best thing to do for a first-timer at Philmont is to
secure a copy of Cooper Wright's Philmont Advisor's Guide. Coop's e-mail
address is: CoopWright@aol.com

For a donation to Coop's Venturing Crew in Virginia, he will e-mail a MS
Word document which has a whole lot of information about preparing for a
Philmont trek. You will be expected to send Coop a $10 donation for each
copy you make of the guide. Coop will tell you where to send the money.

Selden Ball at Cornell University maintains a web page with a great deal
of information about Philmont.
http://www.lns.cornell.edu/~seb/philmont.html

The PhilSearch web page is excellent too, especially when it comes time to
begin selecting the crew's top 5 trek choices.

Another helpful aid is the Philmont e-mail list maintained by the U.S.
Scouting Service Project. http://lists.usscouts.org/

BTW, you and your Scouts will have an excellent time at Philmont. My
first trip was in 1989 and it remains my most memorable high adventure
trip.
