Golly folks, come on. Not sure what went on with John and Alex but geezz, come on already. "ding-bat" is inflammatory? "sanctimonious self appointed God" - well, OK John, you are getting towards the edge there. But, passions do come up on these lists - after all we are all experts, aren't we??
The only problem with John is that he is older than dirt so feels like he has earned his stripes - and he has. I have no problem with him freely sharing his advice. But please folks, it is advice, not commandments written in stone. There is much to be considered when giving the thumbs up to a young scout stretching. In my son's case for instance, he went to the Quiteco his first summer, age 11. But, with a few caveats: He had earned the swimming and canoeing merit badge. And, I went along. Had I not gone, he would not have. And that is usually the rule we follow for water instances - a qualified parent must go along. (sorry, let me explain, we outfit our own BWCA trips) As a paddler, most scouts are worthless until 14+, just no strength. But he could hold his own on portages and had a great trip.
Heck, I am no slouch giving advice either - and I too am an expert - just ask me. Been in the bush since my US paid vacation to Vietnam in 70. Have used and misused just about every piece of gear you can think of. Heck, I am nearly as old as John. But please, feel free to tell me I am all wet (I can tip with the best of them!). :)
Should we talk about turkey bags, gutter nails, tarps, packs, water bottles vs. hydration bags, sleeping mats, sleeping bags while we are at it? :) I am sure we can stir the pot up pretty good if we try. I will certainly tell you the "proper way" to do these things, whether you ask me or not.
I expect no less from all of you!
Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Enjoy your family and Scouts. And as you thank God for all your blessings over the next few days, say an extra prayer for our troops on duty around the world. May they all come home quickly and safely to their family and friends.
