We were there last summer also. My advice, if you have a chance to
go, go. It is different than Philmont, not better, not worse, just
different and a great experience in it's own right. In a perfect
world every scout would get to do both.
Some Double H specific advice:
Overall you will be walking on rougher terrain. The light weight
hiking boots that worked for me very well at Philmont were a little
thin soled for Double H. Fortunately, no big problems for me but I
felt a lot of rocks that I wouldn't have if I heavier soled boots.
You will be doing some real bush wacking. Things hanging off your
pack may get torn off, external frame packs get hung up. I had an
external frame pack ( which I prefer in really hot weather and worked
great at Philmont ) and next time I'll take one of my
internals. Make sure your rain gear will hold up to bush wacking also.
Water pumps are mandatory. You will pump water every day. You will
also need something like MSR Sweetwater ViralStop, they do sell
ViralStop at the base camp store ( of course, call first to make sure ).
Geo caching is a part of the program, bring 10 small things you want
to leave in the caches.
