based on what i was told before my crew left, and what i observed on a
trek in the north from indian writings to ponil to baldy to dean to
harlan, swimming is impractical. bodies of water were either dry
washes, shallow and muddy runs, mud-buttomed catchbasins and ponds, all
too shallow or too dirty to swim in. at the stream where we panned for
gold at copper park the water was clean, shallow, and very cold - good
for footbathes anyway. irrigation ditches aren't safe to swim in
because of the currents and pipes. we're going to the south this year
where fishing is supposedly better so to me it would follow swimming
would be more likely. as far as permission, just follow ssd - maybe
there is a safe wading defense too?
things dry so fast there and with few desirable opportunities i wouldn't
take specific swimming clothing. the best options for washing off are
rain, and in staffed camps showers which close at 5pm. i once asked to
take a late shower and did with water only, clothes included!
