Another serious consideration is the fact that this younger scout's older
brother will be in the same crew. Philmont tends to bring out our true
selves -- folks who are good natured and helpful with others becaome more
so, folks who are impatiet with others or short tempered become more so.
Lever this onto the lifetime of knowing each other that brothers have in
their experience. They can be masters at pushing each other's buttons.
I've seen where brothers who were 3 years apart, nearly caused complete
breakdown of a crew. And back in base camp these brothers got along
reasonably well.
Another consideration is how you package the less strenuous itinerary to
that crew. The advisors will have to take pains to make certain that no
one can use this younger scout as the reason for taking a less strenuous
hike. He can easily become a scapegoat for all sorts ofd problems in that
case. Selling the advantages of the hike - more time for program, more
time for seeing the scery as you hike through it, etc. - will need to be
done carefully and skillfully by the advisors, too.
Finally, the crew will need to work together on a series of training hikes
-- not to get in shape physically -- but to come together as a crew, with
its own identity separate from the other crew's and separate from the Troop's.
