Re: [Philmont]: Age Considerations

In 2000 we had one 14 yr. old with two 15 yr. olds and 3 college students
(freshmen). We did a strenuous trek and he did fine as long as we paid
attention to how much weight he carried. Actually, we moved real quick,
hiked past our sister crew every morning in spite of the fact that they got
an hour head start on us most of the time. We are from Florida, so we
conditioned at a whopping 35 ft above sea level. Our scouts were in decent
shape, and the youngest was not immature. Attitude is everything on the
trail. It was probably the best group of young people I've ever been
associated with, so a mixed age group is not necessarily a problem. Problem
kids are a problem.
