....are bugs (flies and mosquitos) a problem on the treks?
 
This doesn't really answer you question, but it depends on the
location and the conditions. As another has mentioned, the
presence of burros/horses can have an impact on the bug
population, but in my times out there I only recall two occasions
when the bugs 'bugged' me. One was Sawmill (1984) where we had
some pesky deer flies, and the other was at Wild Horse in 1993
where we were all covered with welts by the end of the evening.
I'd suggest you "be prepared", but not overly concerned.
