You will probably see a lot of replies to your question.

A rain suit is preferred by this group because:
    1. The poncho will not keep you completely dry. A rain suit will.
Wind blows rain through the "seams" in the poncho.
    2. The rain suit can be used as pants and a jacket. If you use a
poncho you will still have to take these items.
    3. You will still need a pack cover. A poncho can not be a pack
cover and serve as a rain coat. If you try to do both, you will have
problems in camp. If you want to stay dry, your pack gets wet; if you want
your pack to stay dry, you get wet. Packs DO NOT go into tents when in
camp.
    4. I remember using my poncho at Philmont in 1967, and all my
clothing got wet as I hiked because the poncho didn't breath. This didn't
happen in my rain suit in 2000.
