Re: [Philmont]: Rain Gear and other gear

Thanks John for reminding us of the good old days at Philmont. I went in
1958 and wore blue jeans, sweat shirts, ponchos, a ruck sack with no hip belt
and a cowboy hat. Did I make it? Sure, you can't stop the sun from rising
or setting each day. We lived through it. Did we travel as many miles as
crews travel today? Nope, not with making wood fires and carrying canvas
tents.

Why not take advantage of the gear that we have now. The only folks that are
wearing ponchos now are US Army recruits or the Taliban and neither of them
are very happy. Philmont has removed the poncho from its equipment list for
good reason. It doesn't keep you as warm and dry as a coated nylon rain suit
will. Would I take a poncho to Philmont? Nope. Would I tell a parent that
their son or daughter needs a rainsuit if they are going to Philmont? You
bet. Because when that trekker gets wet and cold, not only does he have a
problem, I do too.
