After consulting all of you on the list, I ordered & have received my new Frogg
Toggs. They weigh almost nothing and are totally impervious to water & rain. For
places with trails cut (versus bushwacking through bushes), they are plenty tough
enough. They are, without a doubt, the ugliest piece of clothing ever manufactured
by mankind. Should make me the brunt of tons of ribbing at Philmont (Bring it on!)
I'm trying them out this weekend on a 16-miler up in Arkansas. What I notice so far
is they are very easy to put on and take off, have no unnecessary whistles & bells to
add weight or let water in, and fit extremely large. If I were to do it over, I'd
order a size smaller than I wear in everything else. Won't have any problem fitting
over cold weather layers, though.
Ponchos vs rain suits: Yes, to all the other mentioned problems with ponchos; but
here is one other. We don't allow our Scouts/Adults to take ponchos to Philmont for
safety reasons: Their billowy sides, we believe, massively increase the odds of a
cook or advisor-trying-to-help knocking over a hot water pot in the kitchen area when
they shift or stand up. Additionally, it brings the trailing material way too close
to the stoves when the arm is raised.
