[Philmont]: Coop's Advisor's Guide

You've seen some great posts in the last few days from Coop & the fact that
these posts come from the Philmont Advisor's Guide that his crew has created
& sells as a fund raiser.

I want to encourage folks to purchase it, there is a lot of good stuff in
there, as one can tell by reading the posts that Coop generously shares with
us. He is not be stingy about sharing information from the guide..... but
there is much more information contained in it that one ever sees come thru
list topics, and it is a fantastic way for a Venturing crew to raise funds.

I have no financial interest in this project, I'm not a part of his crew, we
are half a country apart geographically.... but after several years of
reading his posts, I did make it a point of getting to know him when we both
attended the Philmont Powder Horn in '99 & I had him demonstrate for me the
'ooops bag' method, because I am one of those persons who has to SEE
something and not just read the directions on paper to understand how to
make it work. So I also now consider Coop a friend, and not just a great
list member. (BTW, our crews have used the ooops bag on a couple of treks
since learning about it & it was still something most Rangers had never
seen.... interesting to note that it is now *standard* procedure with the
bear precautions! I can't help but believe the Advisor's Guide helped
bring enough awareness to crews that this method came to light....& has been
adopted into the PHilmont regimen.)

I've said it before as a bit of disclaimer, and I'll say it again (and Coop
knows it too) <grins>.... I don't agree 100% with some of their crews
methods, primarily the use of personal vs. PHilmont equipment. Please don't
take this statement wrong - I'm not saying using personal stuff should not
be done, I'm saying it has not been our choice & using PHilmont equipment
has *never* been a problem for us. But the Guide does give the rationale
for all crew decisions... and for many other crews this decision works fine
for them too. I still like the way our crews have done it. My point is
saying this is I still recommend this Guide, and there is plenty information
given as to why methods are recommended, and information brings knowledge to
make the best decisions for individual crews. There is more than one
'right' way to do a lot of optional things, so please keep your thinking
caps on & figure out what is right for your crew.

Some Philmont things are *not* optional to Philmont & your Ranger will teach
you those. Please follow the PHilmont rules when you are in their space and
don't exercise 'optional' behaviors in those matters.

Back to my first point - send Coop an email & purchase the Advisors Guide.
It is very worth it.
