Boy, you sure like to stir up trouble, don't you? :-))
 
1. I will not backpack without them (unless both my arms are broken -
along with all the fingers and thumbs on both hands)
2. I use the $60/pair bottom of the line poles from REI and they work
fine for me. Plastic handles, no shock absorbers, cheap, cheap, cheap.
But they do everything I ask them to do and I don't worry about using
them for dining fly poles, etc., etc.
3. If you get a reply from Mike Floyd, he'll tell you you MUST have cork
handles, shock absorbers a DVD player with sound system and mud flaps.
 
I have tried a rental pair of high end poles. The cork rubbed my hands
raw and I ended up locking down the shock absorbers for the feel I am
used to. Maybe I lack sofisticashun..... but.....to each his own....
