[Philmont]: Trekking Poles

Whoa -- I went away for a couple of days and almost missed the annual
trekking pole thread.

I have a pair of Komperdell shock absorber poles with cork grips that I got
on sale from a Web site (EMS, I think) for about $60. I use one pole and my
wife uses the other, so they turn out to be pretty cost-effective. Of
course, a couple of the other advisors used broomstick-type poles and were
perfectly happy with them.

Be sure to train with your poles. I found the first few times I used them by
shoulders got sore. They sure helped the old knees, though -- I used to
routinely get knee pain on long downhill stretches, but haven't had a
problem since I started using a pole.

I will agree with another poster who noted that cork grips rubbed his hands
a bit. I have had the same problem. Since I use only one pole I just switch
hands periodically.

We also used them to rig our dining fly in camp.
