Regarding trekking poles, I, too am 42 and just started using them last year. Now, 10 miles only feels like 9. That's better, but not dramatic. I have a knee that makes funny noises, though, so my pole motivation is that the pain stays only auditory. I
highly recommend them. I have the cheap Lekis, with plastic grips & no spring, and find them very comfortable.
Question for the Campfire; service projects seem to be required to get the patch. When is a good time to do this? It appears that on many treks the first couple of days are low-mileage and would provide ample time to perform a service. Is there opportun
ity?
