service projects seem to be required to get the patch. When is a good time
to do this? It appears that on many treks the first couple of days are
low-mileage and would provide ample time to perform a service. Is there
opportunity?

Your conservation location will be assigned to you when you go thru
logistics. You might have a choice of locations, or you may not, depending
on the projects that Philmont is working on & the trek you are on.
Typically, we have had to go 'out of the way' to get to the conservation
site, so that makes for a longer day. This last trek I felt like our crew
hit the jackpot because cons was scheduled at Head of Dean, where we were
camping that night.
